Tamam Shud case and other unsolved mysteries

Post by Palma on 5/1/2016, 23:19

I've been fascinated for a while with the unsolved mystery of so-called Somerton man.

Briefly, a man was found dead on a beach in Australia in 1948. In a secret pocket in the man's trousers was a slip of paper with the words 'Tamam Shud' which was identified as torn from a copy of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Shortly afterwards, another man found the book from which it was torn in his car, parked nearby. In the book, five lines of what look like code were found, but no expert has ever been able to decipher the meaning. There are claims of micro-writing in the code letters but this is disputed by the main authority on the topic, Professor Derek Abbott.

Also in the book was a phone number of a woman who lived nearby, whose identity was kept secret until after she died in 2007. Interestingly, this woman had a son with similar physical attributes to Somerton man, and through his investigations Prof Abbott met and has actually married the daughter of this man.

Anyway, reams and reams of stuff is out there on the net so make up your own minds. I'm thinking spy-related due to the timing, post war and pre entering cold war.

Anyone else find this sort of thing fascinating?

You might enjoy this, although Reddit can be a bit of a pain to navigate a first. They have a whole section dedicated to unsolved mysteries.

Elisa Lam was explained wasn't it? I must have another look at that one.

I dislike reddit due to its difficulty to navigate but they do have a good section on these mysteries. Prof Abbott did an AMA on Tamam Shud not too long ago.

I think Elisa Lam was probably just really sad unhappy She had mental health issues, which would explain her bizarre behaviour in the lift.

I'm obsessed with Tamam Shud, think I've posted here about it before. I reread the wiki page at least every few months. Thanks for the link to the AMA, going to check that out.

I've read about the Somerset Man on Wikipedia before - that story gives me the shivers.

I haven't heard of the others, so I'm off to have a look in a bit. great

I feel a bit like that about Madeleine McCann's disappearance too - I often wonder what happened to the poor little girl. unhappy

Have you listened to the Ghost of Bobby Dunbar podcast by This American Life, Ads? I really loved that one. They did another one too, House on Loon Lake, which was quite mysterious.

God, that Sodder Children one is awful and very suspicious.

Also the Bobby Dunbar one gave me shivers when it turned out it wasn't him after all. I need to check out that podcast!

There's a docu-film on Netflix (I think it's on there anyway) called The Imposter which is a similar thing (missing child and then they are told he's been found...). It's mega creepy. I hope it's on the UK Netflix - B set it up so I can access both UK and US Netflix, so it might be on the US one.

Yeah couldn't agree more, but I think the thing that puzzled people was how she managed to get in the tank unaided, but as Palma says, that may have been solved.

Yeah I think it was thought that the lid would be too heavy to be lifted, but it seems that might not be the case and if she was in the grip of some manic episode, she might have fairly easily got herself in. Just horrible though unhappy

That Sodder children thing is awful and so so weird.

Thanks for all the links. Fascinating reading.

It's funny but although I first heard about Tamam Shud through a television programme, I don't usually watch that type of thing. I think it's because I don't trust whoever makes these programmes not to sensationalise or to push a particular theory.

I like to read verified facts and to make up my own mind.
