    What's your internet/forum history?

Post by Palma on 26/9/2015, 00:20

Well now here's something the influx will be able to get involved in. wave

    Right, me first.

Ah, the wonders of your first massive desktop computer. For me that was 1999. First thing I googled - my name of course to find out what everyone was saying about me. Um,nothing.

I joined yahoo groups and got involved in a nightly live quiz chat room - on dial-up. The first forum/message board I joined was TV Cream. Lots of fun discussing childhood telly, and my first experience of trolls and flame-wars. Another group was fierce, the first Big Brother yahoo group. I still watch BB now but it generates nothing like the debate it did at that time - it was simply a phenomenon. I would be up at stupid o'clock debating about the first housemates.

Fast forward to 2003 - I was aware of the handbag forums but thought they were for middle-class ladies who lunch. How wrong can you be? I lurked for a while then joined to have a bit of a minor troll to stir things up - and ended up staying and being 'normal'.

I joined the splinter HD forum but hated the one word/one smiley type of posts there so didn't get into it. When HB imploded I hung on for a while, lurked on two of the other splinter boards but they weren't my style, and finally somebody remembered me and I got invited here.

I was never invited to the secret boards which I've heard so much [or rather so little] about. I'm not in the gang. unhappy

Anyhoo, here's hoping for fresh blood, a dash of nostalgia perhaps, some lively debate and perhaps even a tiddy-drawing competition. Bring it.

I was late to the whole internet thing, we had access to one website at work (the company's site) and I didn't have a home computer unhappy

At 21 when I bought my first house I got a computer and joined the world of dial up! The first forum I joined was for smart car owners, I joined handbag when my first marriage hit the skids, I think I was posting specifically about my evil mother in law!

After the bag I tried tmt but didn't like the attitude there, I was on damsels for a while and they supported me a lot through my miscarriage and subsequent pregnancy but i seem to have drifted away from it. I'm still a member (and administrator) of the smart car forum but since I sold mine 2 years ago I don't go on there much

I still miss the bag, it's such a shame they ruined it

I was quite late to the forum thing too. Handbag was my first, although I was never very prolific on there and was one of the "quieter" members. I can't use forums at work (and haven't been able to in any job) so that always makes it more tricky to participate as so much tends to go on during the day.

I briefly joined damsels when HB went up the spout but as I've no kids and no interest in having any and it's so family focused it wasn't for me. I also joined tmt about the same time but didn't really post and wandered off. I recently rejoined but not sure I'll ever really fit in there.

I'm also a member of an epilepsy forum but it's also very quiet so it's not one people really use other than for specific questions etc.

I still miss the bag too dolly, think it was of it's time though and don't think it could ever be recreated. Happy to try though gerrin

We didn't have internet at home until I finished uni - 2001

I remember using the computers at college, so 1996, to google stuff, except it wasn't google - probably ask Jeeves or something like that. Mostly pictures of Ewan Macgregor!

I don't even really remember having internet access in my uni houses - maybe in the final year? I had an email address and that was about it, which I would check at the uni computers in the library or media centre, or in Internet cafés when I was abroad. I remember sending my mum flowes and chocolates ordered online and the ensuing phone conversation with both my mum, dad and older sister about what a modern miracle it was. Coupled with great concern about me putting. My card details online.

It was my first job where I really started to use the internet more, remember time wasting all over the place. Playing daft little games and generally browsing a dicking about. That's when I discovered handbag and used to lurk on there, even joined though not sure I ever posted.

Joined the bag properly when I got engaged to the ex, or actually just before, posted mainly on weddings, and then that all went spectacularly wrong and I had so much support, more or less saved my life /dramatic/.

Came here after the bag's demise and that's pretty much it. I read a blog/site called the Toast a lot - successor to The Hairpin, and have posted in a few of the comment sections (mainly regulars, feels like a forum) but mostly lurked.

Gosh, askjeeves -that's a blast from the past. I'd forgotten all about it. It was very heavily advertised when the internet was becoming popular for home use and I think a lot of people would have used it for their first searches. Looking back it was hopeless - rather like those early Spectrum games, 'you cannot enter the hobbit' 'the lamp is not in the wizard'. shake head

There was also lycos the dog, which would 'fetch' your answers. And letsbuyit.com which was rather like a TV shopping channel. I also remember ASOS starting up-it was originally 'as seen on screen' and specialised in items seen on zlebs. I bought a bracelet as worn by Mel B. lol

I also posted on Handbag, but I think I was quite late finding it. I wasn't a prolific poster there, and eventually wandered off to HD, which I quite liked (for the daftness). I met Kats through there and we used to post many a silly thread. Then when that ended, we went to TMT, where we stayed for quite a while until there was a bit of drama (isn't there always?) and we left.

And then Dazz told me about here, so we joined up. great

I've posted on Damsels in the past, and still post occasionally on Mumsnet, which I find useful despite not being a Mum or Annette.

Was on Handbag for ages... then on here.

Now I post on Mumsnet under a very different name, however everything I say is true - don't have the energy or inclination to troll anyone.

I never got into either TMT or Damsels.. are they both going?

I remember first using the internet at school in 1996, we were allowed half an hour each, so back then that meant loading one page gerrin Starting using the internet more regularly in 1999. I think I started off using Freeserve chat. I first used Handbag in about 2005 as a friend at work recommended it. I had a brief go at TMT but never really settled. I use MoneySavingExpert forums for competitions, occasionally lurk on Mumsnet and I'm on a L'Oreal forum as they give me Amazon vouchers for participating and I get to test stuff sometimes.

I started around 15/16 - using Yahoo! chat rooms and Yahoo! messenger initially. I mostly used it to chat to men, as I was bullied by any boys I ever met IRL and talking to men online was completely different. My first two serious boyfriends (and some not-so-serious ones/dates) were met online.

The first forum I joined was a self-harm support forum, which helped me to feel a lot less lonely, during a really hard time.

I can't remember when I joined handbag, but I didn't post that much. I came back to it after its heyday really, and then Lily invited me here. Gave up on the bag then.

We had internet quite early on (1994/95) through Uni but I only really used it to email my sister - no-one else I knew had internet access smile Used to sometimes post on an old chat room forum but it moved too quick for our very slow dial up so gave up after that.

Joined Handbag in 2001 ish after a visit to the UK (picked up a leaflet in Boots) but didn't start posting til 2004. Was never a huge poster then moved over to here when Handbag went downhill.

Edie - I got the Handbag leaflet in Boots too!
First of all, I just lurked but then posted occasionally, but most of all in the massive Peter Doherty thread that JAG started.

When that went tits up, then I was invited over here by JAG and here I have stayed.

Before that, our internet was really just used for emails and some of the CBeebies stuff for the girls.

I remember saying to M, when he wanted to buy a PC, that we would never have use for it!!

I know Poggy - scary to think now what we can connect to the internet with between TV's, phones, Kindles, our burglar alarm!!! before we even get to the PC, laptops, tablets etc.

I must admit, it all gets a bit much sometimes and I just sit with my fingers in my ears 'lalala-ing' because it is all moving too fast for me now.

We have one desktop PC, one laptop, Sophie has an Ipad (that I can't even turn on!), and we have a Smart TV - that I don't really know how to use! None of us have Iphones...Mark has a windows phone (that he can only just work out how to use) as does Megan.
I think we are the least tech-orientated family I know!!!

    I joined both recently.

I can't stand Netmums! I still sometimes read it for the cringe factor though.

Mumsnet I posted briefly in the TTC forum, but it's too big and impersonal for me. I often entertain myself reading AIBU threads though. Spy

I'm a member of TMT, but it scares me, so I haven't posted more than a handful of times.

I was on Yahoo! chat too! And then moved to MSN messenger with some of the 'crew' when I was around 15/16. I talked to boys a bit too, and two of them surprised me for my 16th birthday by jumping on a train and coming to visit! I had to lie to my mum and say I knew them from elsewhere, so she would let them in the house lol She still doesn't know they were randoms off the net (luckily they were both 16 year old boys, and quite normal!).

I can't remember how or when I joined Handbag, but I only started posting properly on the Single Girls thread (despite not being one). I'm on a lot of various forums now: sports forum, animal forum, editing forum, cocker spaniel forum, etc...
